The Hawkeyes have risen to the third spot in the AP Top 25 Football poll.
Iowa rose to #3 for a couple of weeks in 2015 and they were also the third ranked team over the final few weeks of the 2002 season. This is also Iowa’s fourth-straight week in the Top 5, which ties the 2002 team for the fourth longest streak in school history. The 1985 team had two streaks that were longer; a ten-game streak to begin the season and then a five-game streak to end it.
The longest streak spanned two seasons, in 1960 and 1961. The 1960 team spent the last nine polls inside the Top 5, including three weeks at #1. The 1961 began the year ranked #1 and stayed there for three weeks before losing in week four. All told, they spent the first six weeks of the 1961 season inside the Top 5, so the streak of 15 weeks inside the top 25 is the school record.
IF Iowa beats Penn State this week, they would be just the fourth team in Iowa history to be ranked for five weeks or longer inside the top five.
Iowa has played in a total of TWO AP Top 4 matchups ever (and only one in Kinnick).
No. 1 Iowa beat No. 2 Michigan in Iowa City in 1985.
No. 3 Minnesota beat No. 1 Iowa in Minnesota in 1960.
So yeah, this weekend is kind of a big deal. pic.twitter.com/yvrOnJdeey
