Iowa in the Rankings: Week Two

Iowa moved up from 18th to 12th in the Coaches Poll this week and from 18th to 10th in the AP Poll.  Here is a link to ESPN’s rankings page.

Here is the AP Top 10:

1. Alabama (59)
2. Georgia (4)
3. Ohio State
4. Oklahoma
5. Texas A&M
6. Clemson
7. Cincinnati
8. Notre Dame
9. Iowa State
10. Iowa

This is the 12th season since 1986 where Iowa climbed to a ranking as high as 10th in the AP Poll, with the last such instance coming in 2015 (Iowa climbed to #3 that season).  They were as high as 16th in 2020 and 14th in 2019.

Since the start of the 1961 season, there have been just four instances where Iowa was ranked in every AP Poll of a season (2019, 1991, 195 and 1983) and just six seasons, all time.  Iowa will look to add to that this year and a win against 9th Iowa State on Saturday would go a long way to making that happen….not that it means anything any longer.

But hey,  Cy-Hawk game with both teams ranked in the Top 10, and ESPN Gameday being present, with Rece Davis and Kirk Herbstreit on the call?  Good times!

IF…big IF…Iowa wins this week, they will have the best strength of schedule resume in college football and be 2-0. I can’t recall the last time, if ever, that I could have typed that.
