Hawkeyes End Regular Season Where they Began: #5

Hawkeyes are ranked #5 in this week's AP Poll

The Iowa Hawkeyes began the season with a #5 ranking in the AP Poll, their highest preseason ranking ever.

The Hawkeyes end the regular season ranked 5th, which is one of their highest end of regular season position heading into the tournament since at least the 1950’s.  This is all the more impressive considering Iowa played what Ken Pomeroy ranks as the 16th toughest schedule in the country, and the 10th toughest defensive schedule and the 19th toughest slate of offensive teams.

The 1987 Iowa team was ranked 6th heading into March and lost in the Round of Eight to #1 seed (and #1 ranked) UNLV.  Iowa ended that 1987 season ranked 6th, or rather, that was their ranking in the Final AP Poll, which used to come out before the tournament and not one after.

Here is a link to today’s poll, that sees fellow Big Ten teams Illinois at #3, Michigan at #4, Ohio State at #9 and Purdue at #20.  Wisconsin and Michigan State were teams that received votes.

Iowa is also at #6 in today’s NET rankings, and #4 in the KenPom rankings.
